Gum Disease
Understanding Gum Disease & Your Options
A 2012 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that one out of every two American adults over the age of 30 has periodontal disease.
The disease, which is also referred to as gum disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth. When left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.
In many cases, gingivitis (gum inflammation) occurs before a patient develops periodontal disease. Gingivitis is very common, but not all cases of it lead to gum disease. A common symptom of gingivitis is bleeding gums.
If you are noticing that you have sensitive gums, bad breath, and loosening teeth, you may have gum disease. You should call your dentist to schedule an appointment before irreversible damage occurs. They will likely suggest you see a periodontist, a doctor who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants.
Dental Implants & Other Treatment Options
Treating Gum Disease
If you are diagnosed with gum disease, a periodontist will come up with a treatment plan for you. The goal of treatment is to promote the reattachment of healthy gums to your teeth, reduce any swelling, and stop disease progression. If you already have severe tooth damage, it may be recommended that you receive a cosmetic appliance, like a bridge, crown, or dental implant.
Dental Implants
If you are missing a tooth, you may need an implant. Implants are usually a two-stage procedure. First, they are surgically placed into the jawbone in the same way that the roots of our teeth reside. Then, the implant is restored by either a crown, bridge, or denture. Learn more about implants.
